[she/her/hers]

Dr. VanAntwerp is a Professor in the Department of Engineering at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her current research focus is sense of belonging within engineering, both for students and working professionals. She is co-author of the book Sex, Gender, and Engineering: Harassment at Work and in School. Additional research areas include engineering education and engineering workforce diversity and retention.

Following her B.S. in chemical engineering from Michigan State University, she earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where her research was in antibody engineering via directed evolution. She then elected to pursue an academic career primarily focused on undergraduate education and so joined a four-year undergraduate teaching institution. This has afforded opportunities for consulting work within both environmental engineering and the pharmaceutical industry, in addition to her academic research.

For her entire 25-year career at Calvin University, Professor VanAntwerp has worked part-time in a job-share with her husband, another Ph.D. chemical engineer from UIUC. They also job-share their work outside of the office in raising their five children, ages 22 through 7.
